Almaty

Almaty is the former capital of Kazakhstan and its biggest city, most of the diplomatic representation keep their embassy in Almaty, even though since 1998 the capital of the country is Astana. Almaty is also the economic, financial and cultural center of Central Asia, it is a tourist destination, and has a large student and expat community with a wide diversity of cultures and citizen, like Kazakhs, Russians, Uzbeks, Germans, Poles, Chinese and more. The Presidential Palace and the Kazakh Museum are its main landmarks, one across the other, and don't miss the The 28 Panfilov Heroes Memorial Park, which honors the men from Kazakhstan who died on the WWII against the Nazi.

Huvsgul

Huvsgul is the biggest lake of Mongolia, is freezing cold almost all the time, but also one of the most beautiful places in the world. Its inhabitants are known as the reindeer people, they live in tepees and live from their reindeer herds. There are many tourist camps, and you can experience the life that ancient people used to live.

Ashgabat

Ashgabat is the capital city of Turkmenistan, a country located in Central Asia, between the Kara Kum desert and the Kopet Dag mountain range. Great places to visit while you are "in the neighbourhood" are the Turkmen Fine Arts Museum with an impressive collection of wove carpets, and the Turkmen History Museum, with artifacts dating back to the Parthian civilization. The Arch of Neutrality is worth a visit, it is a large tripod with a golden statue of former President Saparmurat Niyazov, said to be made of gold. This statue rotates to be always facing the sun during daylight hours.
